Kagoshima Prefecture’s World Heritage Site

Kagoshima Prefecture has two World Heritage Sites.

One is Yakushima, which is located in the southwest of the mainland of Kyushu, and is designated as a World Natural Heritage Site. Its natural beauty and ecosystem are the reasons for registration.

In addition, the primeval forest of Sugi on Yakushima is designated as a national special natural monument.

Another World Heritage Site is the former Shuseikan Museum, the site of the Terayama Charcoal Kiln, and the hydrophobic ditch of Sekiyoshi, which are constituent heritage sites of “Meiji Japan’s Industrial Revolutionary Heritage Steelmaking / Steelmaking, Shipbuilding, and Coal Industry”.

In the old Shuseikan, its reverberatory furnace, machine shop, and spinning mill engineer’s hall are designated.

Both are located in Kagoshima City and are open to the public as archaeological sites and existing buildings.

A special natural monument in Kagoshima Prefecture is Yakusugi (Yakushima Sugi Primitive Forest) on Yakushima, a World Heritage Site mentioned above.

In Kagoshima Prefecture, Fukiagehama and Ohama Kaihin Park have been selected as one of the 100 best beaches in Japan.

Fukiagehama is on the north side of the Noma Peninsula on the west coast of the Satsuma Peninsula, and Ohama Kaihin Park is on Amami Oshima.
